Google Eases Android App Payment Restrictions in Europe to Comply with DMA
Google is relaxing its control over Android app monetization in Europe, permitting developers to direct users to external payment platforms for subscriptions and digital purchases. This shift, announced on August 19, responds to the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which imposes hefty fines on companies maintaining overly restrictive platform policies.
The MOVE could lower costs for consumers and increase revenue retention for developers. Previously, Google's in-app payment system mandated up to 30% fees. The new External Offers Program reduces first-year acquisition fees to 3% while maintaining tiered security charges.
Clare Kelly, Google's senior competition counsel, acknowledged security concerns but emphasized flexibility for developers. The European Commission continues to enforce stringent compliance measures under the DMA framework.
